Sudden Death -

Last Saturday near noon the startling intelligence passed from mouth to mouth, Major Cavenor is dead. It was too true. For some days he had been feeling quite unwell, but he had been around and attended to his usual duties. On Saturday a half hour before he was found dead he was upon the street, presenting no unusual appearance. His daughter Annie first found him lying on his bed — dead.

A Coroner’s investigation was had and the verdict of the jury was that he died of apoplexy. Verily “in the midst of life we are in death.”

The funeral took place Sabbath afternoon, the services being conducted by the Rev. Mr. Smith in the Parlor of the St. Nicholas. At the grave the exercises were in charge of the Masons. The attendance of the Fraternity and of the people generally was very large.

Major Cavenor was widely known as the Proprietor of the St. Nicholas. In his circle of acquaintances he had many warm friends. The Major was an active and enterprising man. He has repaired and refitted the St. Nicholas until it is one of the most comfortable hostelries in the State. He will be much missed in this community.

Transcriber note: Burial in Winterset Cemetery
