Miss Mattie M. Walkup died last Sunday morning at the home of Dr. Balcock, in this city, after having struggled for the past three months with a complication of serious diseases. The funeral was held Monday in the Methodist church at Hanley, and the remains laid to rest in the St. Charles cemetery.
Miss Walkup was one of five children, four sisters and one brother all of whom survive her. She was born July 4, 1841, and at about the age of 13 years joined the Methodist church, of which she was ever afterward a faithful and devoted member. The greater part of her life was spent in Madison county and her friends were many and warm, as demonstrated by the large attendance at the funeral.
