CALLA VIRDEN, EARLHAM

Calla Marie Virden, 52, died March 30, 2008, at her rural Earlham home.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 3, at Early Chapel Christian Church in rural Earlham with Pastor Neal Hanley officiating. An additional service was held Friday, April 4, at Reiff Funeral Home in Independence with Pastor Charlie Hewlett officiating. Burial was at Wilson Cemetery in Independence. Earlham arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham and Redfield.

Calla Virden was born Aug. 6, 1955, in Waterloo to George and Calla (Young) Hutchens and was educated in the Waterloo Community School District. Calla, a homemaker, married Richard Virden on April 6, 2002, at the Early Chapel Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Pamela Hutchens; two brothers, George Hutchens Jr. and David Hutchens; a sister, Amy Yost; and a granddaughter, Alexa Jonas.

She is survived by her husband, Richard, of Earlham; her sons — Ken Hutchens of Fairbanks, Alaska, David Casey of Wooster, Ohio, and Kristopher Casey and Albert Casey, both of Independence; her daughters — Calla Pelton and Dorothy Coonrad, both of Independence, and Patricia Virden, Louise Virden and Amy Meyer, all of Earlham; a brother, Edward Hutchens of Waterloo; a sister, Marylan Hutchens of Waterloo; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held for Calla Marie Virden on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Earlham Chapel Christian Church in rural Earlham, Iowa. Pastor Neal Hanley officiated. Kathy Woolcott was the pianist.

There was also a service at the Reiff Funeral Home in Independence, Iowa at 1030 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2008. Pastor Charlie Hewlett officiated.

Congregational hymns were “In The Garden” and “Amazing Grace”. Soloist David D. Kuhn sang “How Great Thou Art”.

Pallbearers were Charles Pelton, Ken Hutchens, Kristopher Casey, David Casey, Albert Casey, and Tommy Hutchens.

Calla M. Virden was born the daughter of George and Calla (Young) Hutchens on August 6, 1955 in Waterloo, Iowa and died at her home in rural Earlham on March 30, 2008 at the age of 52 years.

Calla was educated in the Waterloo School District. Calla was a committed homemaker her whole life as she cared for her children and grandchildren.

On April 6, 2002, Calla and Richard Virden were married at the Early Chapel Christian Church in rural Earlham.

Calla was a collector of many things, although her favorite items were “Precious Moments” and “salt and pepper sets”. She was an avid Food Network fan and often tried out the recipes on the family. She enjoyed cooking with fresh vegetables from Richard’s garden. Her favorite flower was the calla lily and she was very excited to hear that her newest grandchildren, Calla Christine Pelton, who was born three days before grandma Calla’s death, was her namesake. Calla enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Calla leaves the following family to celebrate her life; husband Richard Virden of Earlham; son Ken Hutchens of Fairbanks, AK; daughters Calla Pelton, Dorothy Coonrad, of Independence, IA; sons Kristopher and Albert Casey of Independence, IA; son David Casey of Wooster, OH; daughters Patricia and Louise Virden, and Amy Meyer of Earlham, IA; brother Edward Hutchens and sister Marylan Hutchens of Waterloo, IA; 12 grandchildren: Michael Coonrad, Katelyn Coonrad, Charles Pelton, Morgan Pelton, Julia Coonrad, Brandon Hutchens, Emily Coonrad, Ian Pelton, Zachary Coonrad, Ethan Hutchens, Jordon O’Conner, and Calla Christine Pelton.

Calla was preceded in death by her parents George and Calla Hutchens; daughter Pamela Hutchens; brothers George Hutchens, Jr., and David Hutchens; sister Amy Yost and granddaughter Alexa Jonas.

Interment was held at the Wilson Cemetery in Independence, Iowa. Kuhn Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.
