County and City

Horace Seerly, whose terrible accident at Leadville, resulting in the loss of his eyesight was reported in these columns, died last Tuesday at Denver, where he had gone for treatment. Up to within a very few days of his death his friends here had heard that he was doing well and would probably recover the sight of one eye. Last week, however, he was taken with a fever, and this news was soon followed by that of his death, although no particulars have yet been received. Especial sympathy is expressed for Mrs. Seerley, who during her husbands’ fatal illness was entirely alone, without a friend or acquaintance in the city. Mrs. Seerly started eastward with the remains Wednesday night and was expected to arrive at Earlham last night. Her brother, Henry Klingensmith, and Lee McGee started yesterday to meet her at Stuart or Atlantic. From Earlham the body was taken to the home of his father, Wm. Seerley, in Madison township, and the funeral was held at 11 o’clock this forenoon at Worthington church. The members of the Evening Star Masonic Lodge, of which Mr. Seerley was a member, met this morning at eight o’clock to attend the funeral and take charge of the burial, which was conducted with the degree of this order.

A few weeks ago we mentioned the fact that Horace Seerly, formerly of this county, was the victim of an accident in Colorado, in which he lost one of his eyes. Now we bear the sad news of his death to his Madison county friends. He died Tuesday, Oct. 1st, the result of a fever which set in just as he was recovering from the effects of the accident. The remains were brought to Madison township, and on Friday the funeral occurred at the Worthington church. Henry Klingensmith and Lee McGee met Mrs. Seerly with the remains of her husband at Stuart. Deceased was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and the Evening Star lodge conducted the funeral.
