The remains of Miss Sally Vance arrived here on the noon train last Saturday, and the funeral service was held at three o’clock that afternoon, at the home of her brother, W. H. Vance, the Rev. B. E. S. Ely, of the Presbyterian church officiating. Miss Vance was a woman of worth, of unselfish life and character, and her absence will be deeply felt in her circle of relatives and friends.

In Loving Remembrance

Sarah K. Vance breathed her last at the home of her half brother, Capt. D. B. Vance, of Brownstown, Indiana, September 11, 1895, aged 40 years, 2 months and 23 days. She was born near Livonia, Washington county, Indiana, June 18, 1855, being the daughter of the late Wm. M. and Mary M. Vance. Her father died about 9 years and her mother 3 years ago.

She removed with her family from Washington county, Indiana, to Knox county, Illinois, in 1865, and removed from Oneida, Knox county, Illinois, to Winterset, Iowa, in 1879. In September, 1893, she left Winterset on a visit to relatives in Illinois and Indiana, expecting to be gone about two years. Her health had been poor since the death of her mother, whom she had faithfully nursed through her last illness of nearly a year’s duration. About the 1st of August last she was taken with a severe attack of gastric fever, and, notwithstanding medical skill and the most careful nursing she gradually grew worse until the end came.

She united with the Presbyterian church of Oneida, Illinois, in her 15th year and lived a devoted Christian life to the end, at the very last expressing her faith in God and loving trust in Jesus.

Her brother, W. H. Vance, received word on Saturday, September 7th, of the probable fatal result of her sickness, and immediately left for Brownstown, Indiana, arriving in time to be with her the last two days of her life, and to hold her hands lovingly and tenderly as she passed to the other shore, the brightness of which she seemed to have glimpses in her last moments.

Mr. Vance left Brownstown with the remains on Thursday Sept. 12, arriving in Winterset on Saturday the 14th, and with the help of the kindly hands and loving hearts of her many friends, she was laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery by the side of her beloved parents.

May her rest be as peaceful as her life has been good.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. B. E. S. Ely, of the First Presbyterian church.
