The passing of Mr. Garlinger at the age of a little more than 70 years marks the passing of the last member of the original Garlinger family, who came here from Ohio in 1855 and located in Union township. John Garlinger was then a lad of four years. His father drove a "freighter" to and from Keokuk for some years, that then being the only method of transportation between the Mississippi and the sparsely settled country of southwestern Iowa. He then took up farming and stock buying and for many years was prominent in the affairs of this community.

Page 1, Column 4DEATH OF J. T. GARLINGER
Mr. J. T. Garlinger died at his home just south of town at 7:30 last Thursday evening, after a sickness of several weeks.
John Thomas Garlinger, son of Thomas and Rachel Garlinger, was born April 9, 1851, in Jefferson county, Ohio. Died at Houston, Mo., July 7, 1921, making his age at death 70 years, 2 months and 28 days. When three years of age he with his parents moved to Madison county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood.
In 1874 he was married to Charlotte McCabe. To this union were born one son and one daughter, H. G. McCabe, of Salem, Mo., and Mrs. Ella May Bishop, of Creston, Iowa. In 1877 his wife died.
He and his father became engaged in buying and shipping stock, making acquaintances far and wide.
In 1885 he was married to Mary Ellen Allen, and in 1907 he with his family moved to Houston, Mo., living on a farm near town ever since. Although a cripple, Mr. Garlinger was a hard-working man and a good manager, but his health necessitated him retiring from active work. He was well liked by all who knew him and was respected as a good and honest citizen. Last September he was taken down with Bright’s disease and was a constant sufferer ever since.
In 1911 he was converted and while he never attended church often, yet he never forgot to pray and told his relatives and friends that he was ready to go to his Maker. During the past three weeks he was unconscious. His wife and three children, Joseph, Maude and Gertrude, were constantly at his bedside and did all in their power to relieve the sufferings of their stricken husband and father.
Funeral services were conducted at the family home at 11 a. m. Friday by Rev. H. B. Tillery, after which the remains were shipped to Winterset, Iowa, to be laid beside those of his father, mother and brother. His daughter, Gertrude, and husband accompanied the remains. Friends join with The Herald in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.
