EZRA BROWNELL

Ezra Brownell was born in Schohanie county, N.Y., Dec. 2, 1838, and moved with his parents to Lake county, Ind., when a young boy.

On Feb. 20, 1866, he was married to Harriet Foster of Crown Point, Ind. Three sons were born of this marriage, Frank A., of Alamosa, Colo.; Fred D. of Winterset and Otto F. of Des Moines. The wife and mother died Feb 3, 1892 while on a visit to Lowell, Ind. He married Matilda Bain in 1899.

The deceased was long an honored member of the fraternity of Odd Fellows, receiving his degrees in Lowell, Ind., Lodge No. 245, Feb. 12, 1875.

Mr. Brownell was a union soldier from Aug. 12, 1862 until his honorable discharge, June 5, 1865. He was a member of Co. A. 99th Indiana Infantry, of which only three are living. He participated in 23 battles, and was in Sherman's famous march to the sea. He distinguished himself in the battle of Atlanta for bravery and quick action in rescuing the colors when the color bearer was shot down. He tied up the broken staff of his flag with his shoe string, and carried it through the battle. It now reposes in the state house at Indianapolis, a mute witness of his fidelity.

Mr. Brownell resided in Iowa since March 1875, the last eight years he was the honored guest of the Odd Fellows' Home at Mason City where he died quite suddenly of heart failure, Jan. 26, 1921, age 82 years, 1 month, 1 day. The body was taken to Lowell, Ind., by his son, Otto. The funeral service was held at the M. E. church in that city, Sunday afternoon, Jan. 30, conducted by Rev. Brown and the Lowell Odd Fellows lodge, No. 245. To the sounding of taps, the body was lowered into the grave beside the wife and mother in the West Creek cemetery on the farm where they lived the first few years of their married life.
