GEORGE ANDREW BUCHANAN

George Andrew Buchanan was born in Lawrence county, Illinois, Feb. 15, 1851 and departed this life Feb. 16, 1921. When 21 years of age he came to Madison county from Illinois and he continued farming for nearly 50 years.

He was united in marriage to Sarah E. Compton, Jan. 5, 1876. To this union one child was born, Winnie E., who died in infancy, and his wife departed this life Feb. 12, 1877.

He was married to Mary Elizabeth Haynes, Dec. 18, 1884 at her home near St. Charles. When 15 years of age, he united with the Pisgah Presbyterian church in Lawrence county, Illinois, and continued faithful to the end. For 12 year he was a member of the Winterset Presbyterian church and later removed his membership to the Pomeroy Presbyterian church.

He leaves to mourn their loss his loving wife, Mary E. Buchanan and their children: Mrs. Leon Smiley of Curtiss, Wis., Glenn Ray of Curtiss, Wis., Mrs. Will Hall of Medford, Wis., Mrs. Ray Grout of Winterset, Mrs. Carl Carlson of Rockwell City, Otis and Floyd, who are still at the parental home near Jolley.

There are three brothers: Charles J. of St. Charles, R. O. Buchanan of Bridgeport, Ill., and four sisters: Mrs. Addie Andrews of St. Francisville, Ill.; Mrs. Martin Weddell of Lawrenceville, Ill.; Mrs. Gus Buchanan of Indianapolis, Ind.; and Miss Elmina Buchanan of Lawrenceville, Ill. There are 11 grandchildren, and many other relatives and a host of friends. He was held in high esteem and will be greatly missed.

The funeral service was held in the First Presbyterian church, March 3 at 2:30 p.m. with a sermon by Rev. L. C. Cooley from the text "Seek those things which are above," and interment was in the Winterset cemetery.

Death of George Buchanan

George Buchanan died on Feb. 26th from hardening of the arteries, at his home in Jolley, Iowa, located near Fonda. Mr. Buchanan lived in Madison county until about ten years ago. He grew to manhood, married and reared a family of eight children in the county adjacent to Winterset, living on various farms. Mr. Buchanan was greatly respected and liked by his neighbors and friends. His loyalty to church was often remembered, and his attendance at Sunday school was faithful and earnest.

Seven children are living, one son, Carl dying several years ago. Mrs. Ray Grout is the only daughter who now lives here, and one brother, Charles is the only brother of Mr. Buchanan now living in this county. The remains were brought here Monday evening for interment by Mrs. Buchanan and her family.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 in the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. LeRoy C. Cooley.
