Death of George W. Eyerly

George W. Eyerly, a civil war veteran and pioneer of Madison county, died last Thursday, May 5th, at his home, a few miles west of Winterset at the age of 84 years. He had been ill for a number of weeks with pneumonia and complications.

Mr. Eyerly was born in Mansfield, Ohio, January 17, 1843, and came with his parents to Washington county, in Iowa, at the age of three years. When he was seventeen he moved to Jasper county, and there he enlisted in the Civil war. At the close of the war, in 1865, he came to Madison county, and located on a farm in Douglas township, where he has since resided.

The deceased has been an active and influential man of this community, and the high place he held in the estimation of his companions was due to his integrity and uprightness.

He is survived by his wife and seventeen children. Funeral services were conducted at the home, Saturday, May 7th, by Reverend Mr. Jordan, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. More details of his life may be found in the obituary on page three of the Madisonian.

George W. Eyerly

George W. Eyerly, son of Samuel M. and Mary A. Eyerly, was born in Mansfield, Ohio, Jan. 17, 1843, and passed away at his home near Winterset, Iowa May 5, 1927, at the age of 84 years, 3 months and 19 days. He was one of a family of eleven children, five girls and six boys. Those surviving him are: Mrs. John Gamble of Apache, Okla., Mrs. Thomas Low of Stuart, Iowa, Mrs. Arthur Ferrin of Wilmore, Kan., and James H. Eyerly of North Loop, Neb. Those deceased are: Mrs. Nannie Caiterlin, Mrs. Kate La Pella, Daniel H., Erastmus S., Joe R., and William R., who was killed in the Civil War. In 1846 he moved with his parents to Washington county, Iowa. At the age of seventeen his parents moved to Jasper county, Ia., where he remained until the outbreak of the Civil war. To this great cause he enlisted his support, and after three years of active service with Company E. 40th Iowa Volunteer Infantry was honorably discharged at Ft. Gibson, Cherokee Nation, August 11, 1865 and immediately resumed his occupation of farming in Madison county, Iowa.

December 9, 1865 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Angeline Howell. To this union were born thirteen children: Mrs. S. M. Cocklin of Ridgeway, Mo., Vincent A., Deceased, Mrs. C. T. Knight of Meridian, Idaho, Virgil E. of Earlham, Frank H. of Brighton, Colo., Will C. of Macksburg, Charles L. of Brighton, Colo., Earl E. of Lorimor, Georgia R., deceased, Loren H. of Winterset, Ray V. of Macksburg, Fred R. of Winterset and Ralph H. deceased. On October 18, 1892 Mrs. Eyerly passed away after a brief illness. On December 11, 1897 he was united in marriage to Miss Clara Bailey. To this union were born seven children: Mrs. Eldon Thomas of Winterset, Emerson of Winterset, Howard R. of Torrington, Wyoming, John H. of Chicago, Mable M., Lloyd W. and Samuel O. of Winterset.

Mr. Eyerly was converted when he was fourteen years old. In 1857 he joined the Methodist Episcopal church and has ever since been an active member and ardent supporter. As a symbol of his Christian sincerity he donated to the West Star church the ground on which it now stands. He was loyal to his church and loved to read his Bible. He was a good citizen, husband and father. During his last illness he had the best care that physician, companion and children could give. As he drew near the end, he expressed a willingness to go, stating frequently that he was ready. When the end came he passed away as quietly as a child going to sleep. May we all live so that we may meet him in the City of the Redeemed. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, seventeen children, fifty-three grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, three sisters, one brother and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Jordan at West Star church, Saturday at 2 p.m. Interment was made in the Winterset cemetery. Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Howard Eyerly of Torrington, Wyoming, John H. Eyerly of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Low of Stuart, Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Cocklin and daughter Marie of Ridgeway, Mo., Miss Ruth Eyerly of Iowa City, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Cutler and J. G. Cutler of Des Moines.
