County and City

Mrs. Jane Graham, more familiarly known as Grandma Graham, died at her residence on east Court Avenue, yesterday morning. Her last sickness was but of a few days duration. She lived to a ripe old age, nearly ninety, and passed peacefully to rest.

The funeral is postponed till Saturday, awaiting the arrival of children and other relatives.

Long will her kind-hearted and loving neighborly ways be a frequent memory to her children and grandchildren, and the large acquaintance who affectionately called her “Grandma.” Only a couple of weeks ago, or a little more, her son M. J. Graham, and family, moved from Douglas township into her home in the city, and were about her till the last, during all that loving affection could suggest, for her comfort.

In Memoriam

Mrs. Jane Popham Graham was born in Virginia, April 12th, 1809. Was married to William M. Graham, March 10th, 1835. Eight children blessed this union, seven of whom are still living.

Mrs. Graham was raised in the Baptist faith, but after her marriage became a member of the Associate church, and the time of the Union, she with her husband joined the United Presbyterian church, of which she was a consistent and exemplary member at the time of her death, which occurred Thursday morning, December 14th, 1893.

Mother Graham, as she was familiarly called, lived a life of unusual faith and trust, whilst she looked not on the things which are seen and temporal, but on the things which are not seen and eternal. Like Paul, she had a yearning desire to depart and be with Christ. Her hope of Heaven was particularly strong and bright. Her pathway was indeed as the shining light that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. She came to her grave, “in full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in his season.” The hallowed influence of her life will rest as a benediction upon all those who survive her.
