Alex Bertholf, one of the oldest settlers in the county, dropped dead at his home near the Ord post office, Thursday morning. There are no particulars but it is supposed that his death was caused by heart disease.
His father was one of the first settlers in the county, and lived for years on the homestead now owned by Lindsay Bertholf, his brother. Mr. Bertholf has been in ill health for a number of years.

Died, at his home in Madison county, Iowa, January 23, 1902, Alexander Bertholf, at the age of 68 years, 9 months, 21 days.
He was born in Galie county, Ohio, in 1833, and in 1835 removed to St. Joseph county, Indiana, Andrew Bertholf, his father, carrying him on horseback, his mother carrying a younger brother. They remained in Indiana until 1843, when they settled in Lee county, Ill., and lived there until they removed to this county, May 29, 1851. He was married in 1854 to Lucinda A. Niles. She died in 1854. He was afterward married to Mary Demar.
He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn over his death. Some few years ago Mr. Bertholf visited his brothers and sister in Colorado. While out there he had a light stroke of paralysis, and since then he has been in failing health.
On the morning of the 23rd of January, 1902, he arose as early as common, ate a hearty breakfast, and seemed in as good health as common. He was out about the barn while the boys were doing chores. A few hours later he was sitting in the house, waiting for Mr. Lyons, the hackman, to deliver the mail. He was talking about the Mabel Scofield case, and said he would go out and see if Mr. Lyons knew more about it. He arose and went out of the house, and dropped dead in front of the door.
Mr. Bertholf, with his father and brothers and sisters, was among the earliest settlers in this county.
