EVERETT EATON OF WINTERSET DROWNS

Recent Graduate of Local High School Dies at Gulfport, Miss.

Everett Eaton, 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph R. Eaton of Winterset was drowned on the beach of Gulfport, Mississippi, on Wednesday of last week. The youth had arrived at Gulfport the day before to spend a vacation with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Eaton, who operate a tourist camp at that place. He had left here on Monday of last week.

Everett Eaton was well known in Winterset. For the last two years he had attended the Winterset high school and graduated with the class of 1935.

Details of the tragedy were meager here, but the following message was received from the father: “It is not known just how the fatal accident occurred. He was engaged in the sport of crab hunting along the sea wall with several other guests of the camp. After the fun slowed up, the group scattered, and when Everett did not return to camp shortly a search was started for him. He was found by his uncle in shallow water along the gulf wall. It was supposed that in catching crabs he slipped and fell on the wet cement steps or wall, and was very likely unconscious when he hit the water. There was only two or three feet of water where he was found. Everett was an excellent swimmer.”

The youth was born near Ladora, Iowa, on November 1, 1916. He attended various schools in Iowa, entering high school at Scranton where he took his first two years.

At the age of 15 he united with the Methodist church at Scranton.

He moved with his parents to Winterset in 1933. In addition to his parents, he leaves a brother, Verlin, and two sisters, Anita Maxine and Marjory Arlene.

The body was returned to Ladora, where funeral services were held Monday, conducted by the Rev. J. S. Ellis of the Methodist church of Scranton, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Williams of Ladora. Burial was made in the Ladora cemetery, with six uncles of the youth serving as pall bearers.
