Obituary Notice

Brief Notes of the Life and Character of William R. Cline.

Died—at his residence in Winterset, Iowa, at one o’clock on July 1, 1893, William R. Cline in the sixty third year of his age.

Mr. Cline was born in Ross county, Ohio, December 30, 1830. In 1846 he removed with his parents to Louisa county, Iowa, where they resided until 1854, when another removal was made, this time to Madison county, where they settled on a large tract of land about six miles northwest of Winterset. That neighborhood continued to be his home till he entered the army, and for a short time after his return. In 1857 he was married to Margaret Goar, who survives him, seven children were born to them, five of whom died in infancy. The two surviving children are James M. Cline of Colorado, and G. M. D. Cline of this city.

In 1864 Mr. Cline enlisted in Co. F., 4th Iowa Infantry, in which he served till he lost his eyesight, when he was discharged. In later years, his sight partially came back, but never became good. A short time after his discharge from the army he removed his family to Winterset, where they resided ever since.

Mr. Cline and wife were members of the Baptist church. He was an earnest, consistent Christian, of the quiet unobtrusive type of man, an exemplary citizen, a devoted husband and kind father. The funeral services were held at the residence, Sunday afternoon, July 2, conducted by Rev. C. Holmes, pastor of the Baptist church, attended by Pitzer Post G.A.R., of which the deceased had been an honored member. The interment was in the Winterset cemetery, where the Grand Army services were held. The casket, adorned with the letters G.A.R., then the sheaf of matured wheat and the buckle, the wreath of evergreen in ---- of immortality and eternal hope, the ---- of roses emblem of purity, and all interred with the emblem of victory, the flag he loved and served, was lowered from sight, where the body reposes in the hope of the resurrection.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
