Death of Ersie Gilpin

This community was shocked to hear of the sudden death of Ersie Gilpin, a former Winterset boy and son of Major and Mrs. T. C. Gilpin, of this place. While on the road with the theatrical company with which he has played for a number of years. He was taken ill with acute peritonitis on last Friday and died the following day at Utica, New York.

He spent a part of his early childhood with his parents at Benton Barracks, Mo., during the Civil was. Came to Winterset in 1864, attended college at Hanover, Indiana, in 1872-73, studying civil engineering. He was married in New York City in 1883, the wife now surviving him.

The deceased was a man who had attained more than ordinary success in his chosen work. Here at Winterset he is remembered as a young man of sterling character, was by nature endowed with a special winning disposition and retained in a remarkable degree the warm friendship of his old time friends and acquaintances.

The remains arrived here this morning and the funeral services were held from the Gilpin home this afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Death of E. F. Gilpin

The remains of E. F. Gilpin arrived here from Utica, N.Y., this morning, where he died last Saturday morning of peritonitis after an illness of about twenty-four hours. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Gilpin and was well known by many here.

Eilerslie Freed Gilpin was born May 15th, 1857, at Rushville, Ind. Moved to Bloomington, Ia., in 1861. Spent a part of his early childhood with his parents at Benton Barracks, Mo., during the civil war. The family moved to Winterset in 1864 where they have ever since lived.

He married in New York City in 1883, the wife who survives him. The larger part of his later life he spent in New York. He was for many years a clerk in the Manhattan Beach hotel. He was also connected with the Waldorf Astoria and Belmont hotels of New York.

Ersie, as he was called here was a general favorite wherever known. He was a handsome boy and grew into a fine looking man, his cordial nature and entertaining ways made him many and lasting friends. He is survived by a wife, parents, two brothers and two sisters who have the deepest sympathy of the community.

Elserslie Gilpin Dead.

Ersie Gilpin, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Gilpin, died in New York Saturday. The burial occurred Wednesday in Winterset.

Elserslie Gilpin was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Gilpin of this city. After graduating in the Winterset high school he entered the theatrical profession. For the last twenty years of his life was spent close to New York City.
