EMMA NEWLIN SMITH DIED IN CALIFORNIA

Relatives Here Have Received The Following Account of Her Sudden Passing.

When rain began to fall and Emma J. (Newlin) Smith, 66, of 1291 Howard St., Pasadena, California, always a careful housekeeper, did not close the windows in her home the morning of the 16th, neighbors reached the conclusion that all was not right. They could not enter because screens were fastened and so officers were called, who entered and found her dead, lying face down on the floor. The body was removed to a mortuary and was identified by Edwin McGrew whose church she attended.

Her son Paul who lives at 196 South Sierra Bonita Ave., and daughter Esther Fox of Barstow were notified.

Emma was living in the home of Lindley McNichols while they were in Iowa on a visit.

She called her daughter-in-law the morning of the 13th and asked her to come over some time that day, and she told her if she wasn’t called to work she would. But in the afternoon she had a work call and could not go before dark. When she went she found the screen door fastened, the house all dark and just supposed Emma had gone out somewhere. She waited around quite awhile; rang the door bell and called and then went home. She said that it must have happened some time that day.

A doctor thought death due to a heart attack. Funeral services were held at Whittier, California the morning of the 20th.
