Obituary

Mrs. Mary Knox Vance was born in Yadkin county, N. C., Oct. 8, 1817, and died at the home of her stepson, E. D. Vance, near Winterset, Iowa, August 31, 1892.

Descending from old Scotch Presbyterian stock she united with the Presbyterian church at an early age of which church she was a faithful and consistent member until her decease. She had been three times married. Her first husband, Rev. Robt. G. McCutcheon, was sent as a home missionary to Texas, where she joined with him in opening a mission school on the frontier, continuing till his death some years later. Returning to her father’s home, now in Washington county, Ind., she was afterwards married to Mr. Henry Ewing, who lived but six weeks after their marriage.

On July 10, 1854 she was married to Wm. M. Vance, of Livonia, Ind., to whom she lived happily until his death, April 8, 1886, and by whom she had two children, both surviving her, as are also her three stepsons, one step-daughter having previously passed away. By precept and example, she trained them all up to a Christian life, and her influence, though exercised in a quiet and unobstrusive manner, has been, and will be, far reaching in its effects on them and on their children.

Her patient endurance and Christian fortitude during her last long illness and for years of poor health previous, was an example to be emulated by all.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
