Sudden Death

On the evening of July 16th, Mrs. Wilson, of Boone, Iowa, accompanied by her youngest daughter, Miss Nora, came to Winterset on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. W. J. Cornell. She had been suffering for some months past from a stroke of paralysis, but seemed to be gradually though slowly recovering from the effects of it. Last Monday afternoon she was not feeling well, had several spells of vomiting, and sent for Dr. Davisson. Nothing serious was thought to be the matter, and after eating supper she retired at about 7:30 o’clock, but she was nervous and unable to sleep. The family retired about 10 o’clock, Miss Nora occupying the bed with her mother. They had given her some medicine at 9 o’clock to quiet her nerves and induce sleep, but at 10:40 being still quite restless, Miss Nora gave her another potion of the medicine. A few minutes after 11 she became quiet, and her daughter thought the medicine was beginning to take effect, when she heard her mother breathing for a moment quite heavily—but only for a moment then all seemed still. She placed her hand on her mother’s breast, but could distinguish no pulsations of the heart. Springing from the bed she went to the room occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Cornell and called them. They hurried to the bedside, but when they reached it all was over. In a moment and without the slightest struggle, she had passed over the river of death. Mr. Wilson and Miss Ida from Boone, Howard from Des Moines, and Mrs. Baker, a sister of the deceased, from West Liberty, arrived at the call of the dispatches on the evening train Tuesday. After a very brief service at the house Wednesday morning, conducted by the writer, the body, accompanied by the family, was placed on board the train for West Liberty, where the parents and one child of the deceased lie waiting now with her the second coming of the Savior she so faithfully served while permitted to remain upon earth. The first of next month would have completed the 62d year of her sojourn upon this sin cursed earth. M.

Note: Burial in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty, Iowa
