Former Prominent Businessman Does Not Come to Meals-–Body Discovered at Noon Thursday-–Had Been Dead Four Hours
Sherman Catterlin, former Winterset businessman and well-known citizen, was found dead in his rooms in the rear of Tucker Brothers real estate office Thursday noon. The body was cold and death had evidently occurred three or four hours before discovery. The day before he had been on the streets in his usual good health.
Mr. Catterlin occupied the two rear rooms over the Montross Pharmacy. He owned the building. His cousin, John Clearwater, here on a visit from Oregon, went to the room three or four times Thursday morning to see him and found the bed disarranged, but did not discover the body which was covered by the bed clothes. The restaurant at which Mr. Catterlin took his meals sent a messenger to the rooms at noon to learn why he did not come to his meals and the body was discovered. Physicians said that death had probably come early that morning due to a functional disease to which he was subject.
Mr. Catterlin was the son of John Catterlin. He was 63 years old. He was married to Miss Senna Shoup who died ten years or more ago. They had two children. Claire and ? both living in California and both present at the funeral which was held Tuesday afternoon in Tidrick’s funeral home.

October 4, 1928Death of Sherman Catterlin
Sherman Catterlin, who has been connected with Winterset business concerns for many years, died last Thursday, September 27th, in his upstairs room on the west side of the square. Mr. Catterlin had not had the best of health for a number of years, but his condition was not considered alarming. Friends missed him Thursday noon, when he failed to come for lunch, and upon going to his room found him dead there. It was thought that he had been dead over an hour. He had been on the streets the previous day.
Mr. Catterlin was a son of John Catterlin and was born in Lucas county sixty-five years ago. He came to this county with his parents when he was a small boy and his father was in the harness business for many years. His mother died in 1873 while his father passed away in 1919.
Sherman as he was familiarly known, attended school in Winterset through his youth and early manhood. Here he began his business career as a clerk and later as the senior partner of the well known firm of druggists, Catterlin & Niblo, who were located on the west side of the square on the present location of Montross' Pharmacy. Mr. Catterlin was in the drug firm for twenty years, extending from 1889 to 1909. In 1909 he sold his interest to E. G. Herring and for several seasons he was traveling salesman for an eastern wall paper factory. He travelled only part of the year, living in Winterset the remaining time. During his long and successful business career he acquired considerable property and he will be remembered on account of his liberal donations to charitable organizations.
The deceased was married to Miss Masena Shoop, February 26, 1889, and to them were born two children, Clair and Vera, of Los Angeles who came to attend the funeral services. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. J. W. Barnett of Los Angeles; Mrs. Kenelm Costa of Des Moines, and Mrs. J. C. Thompson of Macksburg. Mr. Catterlin, like his father, John Catterlin, was a Methodist and a Mason in which organization he was most active.
Rev. A. P. Keast conducted the funeral services Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the Methodist church and burial was in the Winterset cemetery. The Masonic lodge assisted with the service.
