Alvin M. Hench was born Aug 5, 1897 at Belmond in Wright county, Iowa, and died somewhere in France of wounds received in action, Oct. 18, 1918.
He enlisted in Co. A for overseas service in May, 1917, and war started on the ship which returned because of boiler trouble, finally embarking for France in November 1917, via Halifax, upon the same ship as Sgt. Geo. Wilkinson. While in service he was gassed on July 28th at Chateau-Thiery and was taken to the hospital, returning to action again about Sept. 1.
He was a faithful attendant of the Bible school at the Church of Christ and had many friends who will always remember his cheery disposition and clean character.
He leaves to mourn his death, his father and mother, Daniel and May Hench of Winterset and three sisters: Mrs. Grace Moton of Cherokee, Mrs. Bernice Cummins of Lorimor and Miss May Hench of this city and other relatives and many friends.
