WINTERSET SOLDIER KILLED IN ACCIDENT IN GERMANY

Body of Cpl. Harold L. Fish to Be Returned Here For Burial

Cpl. Harold L. Fish, T/5, U. S. army, of Winterset, was killed in a vehicle accident in Germany recently, according to a telegram from the war department, received here last Saturday by his mother, Mrs. Leona Schutt. No details of how the accident occurred were contained in the telegram, but an explanatory letter is expected later.

The young soldier was 20 years of age. He enlisted in the army two years ago, and served through the Central European campaign. He returned home last year and spent a 90 day furlough. During this time he was married to Miss Betty Erickson of near Des Moines.

Following his furlough he enlisted for one more year of service and had been stationed in Germany.

Corporal Fish spent the first three years of his life in Dallas county, but since then had been a resident of this community. He attended the Winterset schools.

He is survived by his wife of Des Moines; his mother, Mrs. Leona Schutt, his step-father, Russell Schutt, Sr.; a brother, Lyle E. Fish of the U. S. army and a step-brother, Russell Schutt, Jr., of the U. S. marines.

The body will be returned to Winterset for services and burial.

Winterset Soldier Killed in Truck Accident in Germany

Harold L. Fish of Winterset, who was killed in a truck accident at Frankfurt, Germany, Sept. 18 while on duty with the American army there, was buried at Adel Monday with military honors.

Corporal Fish was 20 years of age. He was the son of LeRoy and Leona Fish, and was born Feb. 5, 1926 near Des Moines in Polk county and after moving with his parents to Adel, where they lived briefly, came to Madison county when he was a small child. His boyhood was spent in this community. His father died in 1928.

He was married in Des Moines on Jan. 13, 1946 to Betty Erickson.

He entered the U. S. Army on March 25, 1944 and trained for seven months at Camp Van Dorn, Miss., where he was assigned to the 63rd division. He was sent overseas from Camp Kilmar, N. J. and arrived in France in mid December, 1944. His division engaged in combat starting Dec. 22.

He reenlisted overseas in November, 1945 for one year and returned home for a 90-day furlough on Dec. 22, 1945. In April 1946 he returned overseas to Greishem, Germany and was stationed in Germany until his death.

The body was returned to Winterset, arriving late last week, with one of his comrades, Lloyd E. Switzerm, as escort. Funeral services were conducted Monday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in charge of the Rev. W. R. Watkins, pastor of the Winterset Church of Christ. The members of Green-Rogers post of the American Legion participated with their ritual and acted as pall bearers. Burial was made in the Adel cemetery.
