Thursday, May 11, 1905Rachel Mills, daughter of Samuel and Mary Mills, was born at New Market, Jefferson county, Tenn., March 7, 1815. She was married to John Hightower in 1837. Three children blessed this union.
Slavery existed at this time in Tennessee, and the parents feeling it was not right to rear a family with that environment, moved to Henry county, Iowa, in 1847. Soon after their arrival the husband and father died, followed by the death of the little daughter, Mary.
Subsequently the widowed wife was married to Stephen Hockett of Salem, Iowa. In 1863 they moved to a farm two and one-half miles northeast of Earlham where she resided until the time of her death. In 1880 she was bereft of her husband.
She has been a life long Friend having a “birth-right” membership in the church, often holding places of trust and responsibility.
After nine days of great suffering on the first day of May, 1905, at the age of 90 years she passed peacefully to the world beyond.
She leaves two sons, one step-daughter, ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren to mourn her loss.
Funeral services were held in Friends church, conducted by the pastor, on Tuesday morning at eleven o’clock and was attended by a large number of friends. The remains were laid away in Earlham cemetery.
