Obituary

DIED-- In Douglas township, Madison county, Iowa, April 17th, 1891, William Soles, aged 47 years 7 months and one day.

He was born in Tippecanoe county, Indiana, Sept. 16th, 1844. In his fifth year he was left an orphan boy by the death of his parents. In his tenth year was brought by friends to Warren county, Iowa. In his 23d year was united in marriage to Margaret Wade. To them were born three children, all dying in childhood. On the 24th of February, 1875, he was again joined in marriage to Sarah Cooper. In this union were two children, Lizzie and Mabel, who survive him.

He was a resident of Dallas county, Iowa for twenty years. Occupation a farmer and by hard and honest toil providing for his family and home. Within a few years, the hand of disease preyed upon him disabling him to a great degree from hard labor.

On the ninth of March, 1891, he came to Douglas township, Madison county, Iowa and with his family settled near the Douglas Center school house, only being there about one month till stricken down by disease and death.

In early life he embraced serving faith in the Savior, joined the Christian church. After his marriage he became a member of the United Brethren church living a faithful christian till death. Was a kind husband, tender and loving father, a good neighbor and friend. He was much afflicted in body for several years before his death bearing it with christian patience and resignation. One week before his death was taken suddenly worse and at 4 o'clock on the morning of April 17th, he quietly and peacefully passed away to the promised land, dying in the full triumph of victory over the death, and in bright hope of home in heaven.

On the following Sunday the funeral services were conducted at the Douglas Center school house at eleven o'clock, where a goodly number of the neighbors and citizens had assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to their so soon departed neighbor, thus manifesting their hands of aid and hearts of sympathy to the bereft mother and children there in this your deep sorrow and affliction. We would say to the bereaved ones, take comfort and hope from the words of the Savior to the weeping sisters at the grave of their brother Lazaras: "I am the resurrection and the life, whosoever believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." The body was then conveyed to the Winterset cemetery and laid to rest.
