LUELLA GROUT, Audubon

Luella Beatrice Grout, 88, of Audubon died Dec. 4, 2007, at her home.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 10, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon with Pastor Christopher Martin officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Luella Grout was born Sept. 5, 1919, to Oluf and Lucille (Berg) Winther of rural Audubon and was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Audubon. Luella also attended rural schools, graduating from Audubon High School. She moved to Des Moines and was employed by an insurance company Her marriage to Russell Grout took place Oct. 4, 1941, in Mercer, Mo. While her husband was stationed with the United States Coast Guard in San Francisco, she worked as a waitress at a Chinese restaurant. Following his discharge, they returned to Winterset where Luella worked at Brittain's Furniture Store, North Side Drugstore and as the head bookkeeper at Union State Bank, where she retired in 1987. She moved to Audubon to reside with her sister, Ollivene Schmidt. Luella was a member of Our Savious's Lutheran Church in Audubon and the Pythian Sisters, of which she served as a past state director.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, Orville Winther; and three sisters, Emma Winther, Ollivene Schmidt and Wilma Hansen.

She is survived by one son, Russell Grout of West Branch; a sister, Freda Hemmingsen of Audubon; and six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.
