BettendorfPaul Edward Anderson, Sr., 84, of Bettendorf, IA, formerly of Huxley passed away on August 24, 2007 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
Funeral services will be held Monday August 27, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow in Fjeldberg Church Cemetery in Huxley.
Paul was born in Earlham, Iowa on April 18, 1923 to Edward and Fern (Henry) Anderson. He married Virginia Erickson on August 11, 1942. Paul was a WWII veteran of the US Navy. He graduated from Drake University in 1949 and received his MA in Social Work in 1951 from University of Iowa. His social work career spanned over 34 years in the community mental health field as a mental health therapist and director of mental health services.
He served as the director in Mason City, Atlantic and Mt. Pleasant facilities. Paul served as the director for the Southeast Iowa Mental Center in Mt. Pleasant for 14 years at the time of his retirement in 1985. He was known for his advocacy for outpatient community mental health services, his planning and organizational abilities. Paul helped facilitate the planning and construction of the new buildings in Mason City and Atlantic as well as opening the center in Mt. Pleasant in 1971.
Virginia passed away in August 1985. Paul married Beverly Weesner Hayes on June 6, 1986 and they made their home in Bettendorf, IA.
Paul enjoyed traveling, photography, his cars and Lionel model trains. He was a member of American Legion Post #26 and the Elks Lodge 298 in Davenport.
He will be fondly remembered by his wife, Beverly; son, Paul Edward Jr., and wife Jean of Overland Park, KS; twin grandsons, Clinton and wife Ingrid of Prairie Village, KS, Derek and wife Kari of Overland Paul, KS; granddaughter, Carrie Crabb and husband Isaiah of Overland Paul, KS; 5 great grandchildren, Laura, Max, Ava, Miles and Henry Anderson; step daughters, Nancy Soucek and husband Richard of Sweard, NE, Judy Mont Blanc of Jacksonville, FL; step sons, Tom Hayes and wife Janel of Shorewood, MN, David Hayes of Davenport, IA and a host of family and friends.
Memorials may be directed to the University of Iowa Graduate School of Social Work, Lutheran Services of Iowa or charity of your choice.
