Death of Rev. A. Brown

Rev. A. Brown, who during the conference year of 1887-88, was the Methodist minister in this city, died last Sunday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. W. R. Green, at Audubon. Mr. Brown was well advanced in age, and had done valiant service in the ministry for years. During the early part of the war he was preaching in Kentucky, but found it necessary to come north, as his strong union sentiments excited so much hostility that it became unsafe for him to stay there. He came north and has spent most of the time since that in Iowa. He was a man of strong, and some peculiar traits of character, a Methodist preacher of the old sort, one of the pioneer preachers who carried the banner of the cross, and built up the organization of his church far in advance of the luxuries of civilization. At the last conference he assumed a superannuate relation, and retired from active service. But the time of his earthly rest was not long. He has gone to his reward.

Note: Buried at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Leroy Township, Audubon, Iowa
