Joseph A. Harper

Joseph A. Harper was born in Polk county, Iowa, May 4, 1859 and died August 22, 1915, aged 56 years, three months and 18 days. He spent most of his life on and near the old home place, where his parents lived for nearly 60 years. For 30 years he helped to farm the ground, hunt, fish and play in the woods on the sunny banks of Clanton, "down on the old farm."

The year of 1889 he was married to Miss Mary Morton, a childhood school mate. A son, Forrest E. was born to them and in 1894, both wife and child were laid to rest in the Beam cemetery. On Oct. 31, 1899 he and Nellie A. Miller of Barney were given in marriage. To this second union, two sturdy sons, John E., 15 years and Buenos E., 13 years, were born, to be a comfort and a blessing to their mother in years to come.

It will be remembered that the family came back from Minnesota last March and have been making their home with the eldest brother, who was kind enough to share his home with them. Mr. Harper realized his critical condition so therefore made peace with God and man. He begged them not to grieve for him, that all was well with his soul; that he was not going to die but going where he could have eternal rest. He blessed his family, his nurse, friends and neighbors and died without a struggle. May he rest in peace. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church at Winterset. The remains were laid to rest in the Beam cemetery as requested.
