OBITUARY NOTICES.

Notices of the Life and Death of Mrs. Ellen Devine, and her Daughter, Kate Devine.

Mrs. Ellen Devine was born in Ireland in 1836, and came to this country at the age of 13. She was married to John Devine at the age of 19 years, after which they removed to Madison county, Iowa, and have made this state their home up to this time. Died March 16, 1889.

Mrs. Ellen Devine was born in the Catholic faith, and lived and died a faithful member of that church. She was a woman of more than ordinary intellectual ability, possessing great strength of character, and her good judgement with her strict sense of duty made her honored and respected by all who knew her.

She was sorely afflicted with cancer, but bore her terrible suffering with wonderful fortitude, and during all this was firm and unwavering in her trust in her Saviour. She left a husband and six children who were devoted to her, and who tenderly and lovingly cared for her every want, the memories of which will cheer their hearts, and lighten their pathway along the journey of life.

Kate Devine, daughter of John and Ellen Devine, was born Nov. 14, 1860 in Fond du Lac, Wis., and with her parents removed to Madison county. Died Sept. 2, 1889.

Kate was a young lady in the prime of life, and was well known in a large circle of friends. Lively, pleasant and intelligent, she always gained the friendship of those with whom she became intimately acquainted, ever proving herself worthy the esteem bestowed upon her. Evergreen will be her memory in the hearts of her many friends.

About four years ago she went to Nebraska where an elder sister resided, and had since that time made that state her home, returning now and then for a short visit to parents and friends. Early in the winter she came home to assist in caring for her afflicted mother, which she did with unfailing devotion until her mother’s decease.

Her health had been failing very decidedly for two years or more. Although unwilling to believe it consumption was fastening upon her, it was to true, and after her mother’s death her health failed rapidly. In the month of April she went to say awhile with Mrs. Jennie Van Meter, her sister, from whence she was never removed until by death. She was confined to her bed for three months, and very patiently bore her sufferings, and the knowledge that she was soon to lay down her youth with all its hopes and ambitions, on the alter of the fell destroyer.

On the 2d day of September at 4 o’clock p.m. she was seized with a fit of coughing, and immediately afterwards began to pass slowly away. She, realizing this fact, looked around her and said, “Do you think the time has come?” and upon being told they thought it had, she then said, “I am so glad, so glad you are all here. I am ready, ready and anxious to go. I am not afraid, not afraid.” Lingering a short time her spirit passed away at 35 minutes after four.

For several years past she had endeavored to live a faithful Christian life, and we believe her endeavors were honest and true. Her family has the sympathies of many friends, as this second stroke falls already on bleeding hearts, and is a reminder to us that are left that death, sooner or later, comes to all. How soothing to think, mid the trials, toils and disappointments of life that we may, like Kate, approach the grave, calmly and trustingly, “like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.

Mother and Kate! They both are gone,
All earthly ties are riven.
But we’ll life our eyes through blinding tears.
And pray that we in coming years.
May greet them both in Heaven.
