OBITUARY NOTICE.

Death of H. Saxton, a Respected Citizen of Grand River Township.

The death of H. Saxton occurred last Friday at 4 o’clock p.m. The funeral was conducted at the late home of the deceased by Rev. M. Myers, after which the remains were laid peacefully away at the Moon cemetery.

Mr. Saxton’s death had been hourly expected for two or three days before it occurred. But still it was a great shock to the family, as well as to the whole community, where he was universally loved, being straightforward and honest in all his dealings. He will be missed by us all. The sympathy of the whole community goes with the family in their affliction.

Harris Saxton was born April 2d, 1804, in New Haven county, Conn. He was a descendant of Scotish ancestors, inheriting their love of truth and honor, loathing all deceit and hypocrisy. When yet a boy in his teens he came with his father’s family to the wilderness of Ohio, making the long journey with an ox team. He remained there a couple of years, then returned to the old home place in Connecticut.

On the 18th of November he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Smith. Of this union two children were born, a daughter and son, both dying in early infancy. April 4th, 1842, his wife died, soon after returning to Ohio. August 28th, 1842, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Lemermen.

In the spring of 1852 he moved with his family to northern Wisconsin. In a few years he was induced to come to Iowa, as it was then pictured as the garden of Eden. The change to the new home was never regretted. Eleven years ago he and his family came to Macksburg, Madison county, where he has since resided.

His wife and eight children, all grown to manhood and womanhood, survive. It is the first break in the family circle. The children were all with him during his last illness, except two daughters, Hattie Richardson, who lives in Muscatine county, and Eva Peasley, in California. He was one of a family of twelve children. Only one is left, a brother who lives in Duluth, Minnesota.
