Uncle Johnny Reed is very dangerously ill, so much so that his friends have nearly abandoned hope. By a sad coincidence, Mrs. Reed is in nearly as serious a condition of health. LATER--Since writing the above we learn of Mr. Reed's death.

John Read was born in England in 1813. there he grew up, married and lived till he was about 42 years of age. In 1855 he emigrated to America, and came direct to Madison county, Iowa. In England he followed the trade of a carpenter, working occasionally at painting. Since he lived in this county, for here he has lived ever since he came to this country, he has worked at his trade, at running a sawmill, at farming, and in later years at growing small fruits.
Though his life has been a laborious one, he found time for religious work. In early life shortly after his marriage, he was licensed to preach in the Primitive Methodist church in England, and continued a member of that church till he emigrated to America. After coming here he joined the church in his opinion the most like it to be found in this locality, the Methodist Protestant church. In this he became a preacher and continued such till a very few years ago, when he transferred his membership to the Methodist Episcopal church in this city, not that he preferred it, but because he wanted a home in a church that he could attend regularly, and at his age he could not travel the distance required to to reach a congregation of the church of his first choice. He died at his home near this city, Thursday, August 23d, 1888, leaving an aged wife and several grown children and a number of grandchildren. His wife has been lying very low for sometime, and in all probability cannot last long.
Mr. Read, Uncle Johnny Read as he was familiarly called, will be much missed in this community. In the fullness of years and of Christian faith, he has taken his departure.
