LELA MYERS - Second Death In Same Family

Last week's Madisonian contained an account of the death of Frank Myers of Webster township, who died as the result of injuries from the explosion of an engine boiler. His body was laid to rest in the Wight cemetery on last Tuesday.

On Friday morning of the same week his little daughter, aged two years old, drank a quantity of oil of wintergreen and died the same day despite all efforts to save her life. The mother was prostrate with illness and grief over the death of her husband, when the little tot climbed on a chair and took the poison from a cupboard. This happened about 9 a.m. Friday and death ensured on the same evening. The double affliction has aroused the deepest sympathy for the grief stricken parent.

On Saturday, Lon Watson of Lincoln township circulated a petition in Winterset and a handsome purse was donated to go toward defraying the expense incurred by the sickness and death of the father and the little girl.

Transcriber's note: The Madisonian erroneously reported this as daughter Lela, who at three months old, could not have climbed on a chair to get at the poison. The daughter who died was 2 year old Maude Elizabeth. Burial was made in Wight cemetery.

A Sad Death

On last Thursday little Maude Myers, the two year old daughter of Mrs. Frank Myers of Webster township, accidentally got hold of a bottle of oil of wintergreen and drank a large quantity of it, and died on Friday. Frank Myers, the father of the little child, died just a week before on Aug. 19th from burns received from the explosion to the boiler of a threshing engine which occurred a week before his death. Mrs. Myers is about twenty years of age and is almost prostrated by her great double sorrow. The heartfelt sympathy of the entire community is extended to her and the bereaved relatives.
