Sarah E. (Mendenhall) Jones

Sarah E. Mendenhall, daughter of Jesse and Phebe Mendenhall, was born near Noblesville, Hamilton Co., Ind., August 28th, 1843, died at her home in Earlham, Ia., January 31st, 1914, age 70 years 5 months and 3 days.

She came to Iowa in the summer of 1869, was united in marriage with Daniel R. Jones, April 6, 1872. To this union were given two children, Charles E. and Laura J. Jones, both died when only a few months old.

The deceased was left without a mother when 12 years of age. She united with the Friends Church at the age of 14 years, bringing her right of membership to Earlham, Iowa in 1871.

Later in life she yielded herself in full consecration to the services of God and the work of the church at that time receiving the witness of the spirit, which ever after, characterized her life in a patient and faithful Christian service, while she could not in a special sense be called a public worker, yet always faithful in the attendance on all the regular church services and often giving a clear testimony of the saving power of the grace of God.

She was more largely devoted to her home duties, looking carefully after every detail of home life, desirous at all times as a wife and mother, to make home the most pleasant and happy place to live.

There has gone from us, a true and devoted wife and Christian citizen of sterlingworth.

A husband, one brother in Iowa, two sisters in Indiana, and an adopted daughter of Pasadena, Cal., with other relatives and friends are called upon to part with one that’s near and dear to all, yet they sorrow not as those who have no hope.

Funeral services were held at the Friends Church Tuesday morning, by the pastor Rev. Brown, assisted by Rev. Stribling. Interment was made at the Bear Creek cemetery.
