Death of MRS. SAVILLA COMP

Mrs. Savilla Comp died at her home in Winterset on Feb. 23d, at the age of eighty years. She had not been well for several years, but her condition became grave a few weeks ago.

Mrs. Comp had lived in Madison county for fifty-five years. Consequently, she and her husband, Joseph Comp were known far and wide, being deeply interested in all church and community matters. For fifteen years, Winterset has been the home of the Comps, Mr. Comp dying abut five years ago. Mrs. Comp is survived by one siser, one daughter, and four sons.

Funeral services at the Methodist church Monday afternoon were conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton. Burial was made in Winterset cemetery.

Savilla, daughter of William and Mary Johnson, was born in Orrville, Wayne county, Ohio, Nov. 13, 1843 and departed this life Feb. 23, 1924 at her home in Winterset, Iowa, aged 80 years, 3 months and 10 days. Her youth was spent and her education received in the locality in which she was born, and in which she continued to reside until after her marriage to Joseph Comp on Oct. 2, 1866. April 9, 1869, accompanied by her husband, she came to Madison county, Iowa, and the following year settled on the old homestead commonly known as Comp’s Corner. Here is where she, as a young pioneer bride, helped to wrestle from the wild community a happy, hospitable and prosperous home for herself and family. Here it was that Mother toiled and patiently endured without murmur or complaint, here it was that the cup of joy and sorrow were alternately drained.

Here it was that the Grim Reaper invaded the home and in the bloom of young womanhood removed her oldest daughter, Ora. Amid such surroundings and under such circumstances, “Aunt Savilla,” as she was widely known, lived to see her entire family of four sons and one daughter grow to years of maturity and locate in homes of their own. During her long resident in the West Star neighborhood, she was a faithful and consistent member of that church and its organizations ever ready and willing to do her part, whatever the occasion might be. Some 15 years ago, accompanied by her husband, they moved to Winterset, to spend the twilight of life in the cozy home she occupied at the time of her death. Bereft of her husband five years ago, she continued to cling to the place that meant so much to her.

She leaves to mourn her loss, a sister, Mrs. Lavina Kuntz, of this city, Mrs. George and Mrs. Will Johnson, both sisters by marriage, the former of this place and the latter residing at Pleasantville, Iowa; Mr. Henry Kuntz of Winterset. The children are: William, the oldest, residing in Jackson township; Walter, living just west of Winterset; Ira, of Scott township; Frank who resides on the old homestead; and Mrs. S. G. Hoeness, located in the Pitzer neighborhood, together with 15 grandchildren and a host of friends who will sadly miss the loving smile and the fond caress of one who was never happier than when one and all were gathered about her parental home.

Gradually failing in health, her condition became critical about three of four weeks ago and as the end drew near she was willing and ready to go, having in her youth placed her faith in the one who was her God and Guide through all life’s journey and just a very short time ago, she and Grandma Conant, who so lovingly and faithfully ministered to and watched over her, sang together the song, “Some Sweet Day By and By.” She was a member of the Woman’s Relief Corps and was held in the highest esteem by her other members and by all who knew her.

Funeral services at the Methodist church on Monday afternoon, were conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton, assisted by Rev. G. G. Wagoner, pastor of the West Star Methodist church. Burial took place in the Winterset cemetery.
