Death of MRS. MARGARET JONES

Mrs. Margaret Cox Jones died in Winterset on Dec. 15, 1921, and was buried on Saturday afternoon in Rock City cemetery, following funeral services conducted by Rev. LeRoy C. Cooley in the Prestyterian church.

Mrs. Jones came to Madison county 66 years ago with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Cox, well known to the early settlers of this community.

With the exception of a few years spent in and near Washington, D. C., Mrs. Jones lived her life in and near Winterset. She was a woman of great strength and character, big hearted, always cheerful, an earnest Christian. Her death leaves not only a great vacancy in her home, but in the hearts of her friends.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Stanley Wauchope and two grandchildren.

MRS. MARGARET C. JONES

Margaret Cox was born Sept. 3, 1848 in Mahaska county, Iowa, and died in Winterset Dec. 15, 1921. In the year 1855 she came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Cox, to Madison county.

These were pioneer times and the home chosen was a claim originally located by a man named Mills. There they lived continuously till the death of the father and mother. The location was a beautiful one, two miles east of Winterset, and was always noted for its genuine hospitality. The cares of the home fell largely to the daughter, Maggie, she being the oldest of six children.

She was married to E. W. Jones, pioneer merchang of Winterset on Feb. 14, 1888. Since his death, on June 28, 1897, she and her only daughter, Eleanor have lived together continuously until her death. Mrs. Jones suffered from a paralytic stroke about a year and a half ago, from which she never entirely recovered. She was living at that time with her daughter at Washington, D.C., and in March last returned to Winterset, where she has been a constant and patient sufferer. During all this time her daughter has ministered to her with tender care and solicitude. Her home on Court avenue will be remembered by her many friends, as a place where they always received a cordial welcome and unaffected hospitality. She will especially be missed by the ladies of the Presbyterian church, of which she was a communicant since her marriage to Mr. Jones.

Besides her daughter she leaves two grandchildren, Stanley and Margaret Wauchope.

Funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian church on Saturday afternoon, by Rev. LeRoy C. Cooley, with interment in the Winterset cemetery.
