OBITUARY

John Walkinshaw Thomson was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., April 30, 1810. When seven years of age his parents moved to Wayne county, Ohio, where they remained four years, when they removed to Delaware county, Ohio, where he lived 33 years. In that county all his father's family grew to manhood and womanhood, and there several of them with their descendants still live, and there his parents both died in extreme old age.

He was married to Isabella J. Warren, daughter of Capt. Robert Warren, of Delaware county, Ohio, Feb. 11th, 1841. They have had nine children, Mary E., Sarah A., Carolin, Andrew, Homer, Warren, Jeannette, James M. and John W. Of these Andrew and Jeaneet died in early infancy, and John W. at six years of age. The other six, and twelve grandchildren survive him.

In the spring of 1856 he removed with his family to Madison county, Iowa, residing for eight years on the farm now occupied by Thomas McDonald in Douglas township. In 1864 he removed to the farm near Douglas Center, which was his last home.

From early youth almost till his death his life has been one of continued toil. Twice during his life he underwent the hardships of pioneer life--once in Ohio and once in Iowa.

He was a man of some eccentricities, but in all things honest. He was an early and honest abolitionist, and a man alwyas in sympathy with the masses of the people. He was brought up a strict Presbyterian, but at about twenty-four years of age he united with the M. E. Church, of which he remained a member until his death, which occurred Sunday, July 29th, 1883.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
