DEATH OF HON. THOMAS D. JONES

At three o'clock on the morning of May 24th, the Hon. Thomas D. Jones passed from time into eternity and was no more of earth. Mr. Jones was one of the oldest settlers of the county. We have not been able to learn what year he emigrated to it--the history of our county, though mentioning him frequently, does not state when he became a citizen. His name does not appear among the list of voters at the first election in August, 1849, nor is his name in the first assessment, but Mr. Jones has since owned a large amount of town and county property. The first mention of Mr. Jones in the History of the County is the statement that in 1859 "T. D. Jones, Democrat, was elected Representative over David Bishop, Republican." Mr. Jones made a very good Representative. He was elected as a Democrat but it was not long after until he became a Republican and so continued until his death. In 1869 he was the Republican candidate for County Judge, but he was defeated by Lewis Mayo. Mr. M. having received eleven more votes. Mr. Jones for a long number of years was an active citizen, but for several years back he has been an invalid and was not often seen upon our streets excepting election day. He never failed to do his duty as a citizen at the polls. Thus one by one those who tie the present to the past drop away, and the roll of old settlers year by year becomes shorter.

Note: Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
