Josephine Florence Hetzler, daughter of G. W. and M. E. Hetzler, was born in Bureau county, Illinois, September 5, 1859.
She was united in marriage with James H. Adkins at Winterset, Iowa, March 5, 1879. The fruit of this union was one son, who with the bereaved husband, survives her.
Mrs. Adkins died at the residence of her father in Winterset, on the 25th day of February, 1883, at 9:30 p.m.
The seeds of hereditary consumption, had, early in life, fastened upon her, but did not become fully developed until about one year ago. From this time the progress of the destroyer was rapid and sure, despite the most devoted and careful attention and medical skill. About four weeks ago it became apparent to all that the end was near, but though worn with constant and severe suffering, the gentle self denying patience and Christian fortitude which were so preeminent in her character, only shone with brighter lustre, as the frail body failed.
The closing hours were peaceful and triumphant. Conscious to the last she declared herself both ready and willing to go, and while a seraphic smile illumined her wasted features, she called the family and friends around her couch, and bid each one, in turn, an affectionate farewell saying: "kiss me, and do not weep for me, I will soon be at rest." Gently her calm spirit fled that quick, Sunday night, returning to God who gave it.
The funeral took place on Tuesday, the 27th, and was attended by a vast concourse of friends among whom the dear departed one was known and beloved.
