Helen Mary Imboden, 96, died at the Community Care Center in Stuart.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the Penn Center Methodist Church in rural Earlham with Pastor Jerry Hoff officiating. Burial was at Penn Center Cemetery.
Helen Imboden was born Aug. 30, 1911, to Ernest and Clara Bangert Haines of rural Ft. Lupton, Colo., and was a 1931 graduate of Redfield High School. Her baptismal of faith took place at the Early Chapel Church. On Aug. 6, 1932, she wed Clifford Imboden in Grand Island, Neb. Helen was involved in farming all her life. She was a longtime member of the Penn Center Methodist Church and very active with the United Methodist Women. She also was a member of the Dizzy Dozen Card Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Ernest Haines.
She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Libby of Lorimor and Carolyn McConnelee of Orange, Calif.; three sons, C. LaVern Imboden of Urbandale, Russell Imboden of Corona, Calif., and Larree Imboden of Dexter; two sisters, Alice Haines Couch of Adel and Virginia Haines Harvey of Redfield; and 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007 at Penn Center Methodist Church in rural Earlham with Pastor Jerry Hoff officiating. Pianist was Lynne Hoeksema. Soloist Karin Smith sang “The Little Brown Church in The Vale,” “Take Me Home Country Roads,” and “How Great Thou Art.” A congregational hymn was “What A Friend We Have In Jesus.”
Bearers were Steve Imboden, Rob Imboden, Phil Imboden, Dan Woods, Dan Libby, Paul Imboden, Curt Taylor, and Todd Armstrong.
Honorary bearers were Brad Waltz, Mike McConnelee, Mark Zienowicz, Dout Lewis, John Stewert, and Tim Schuldt.
Interment was in Penn Center Cemetery, rural Earlham.
Helen M. Imboden was born the daughter of Ernest and Clara Bangert Haines near Ft. Lupton, Colo. on Aug. 30, 1911.
She was baptized at the Early Chapel Church and graduated from the Redfield High School on Mary 15, 1931. Helen and Clifford Imboden were married Aug. 6, 1932 in Grand Island, Neb. This union was bless with five children: Marilyn, Carolyn, C. LaVern, Russell, and Larree.
Helen was involved in farming all her life. She was a long-time member of the Penn Center Methodist Church, very active with the UMW, loved playing cards with the Dizzy Dozen Card Club, and was an avid bingo player.
She loved to spend time with family and friends. She made sure her children were involved in church school, 4-H, county and state fairs, and other community activities. Helen was a great cook, especially her scalloped chicken. She would raise a large garden and canned 800 quarts of food items each year to feed her family.
After Helen moved to the care center she became known as “The Hat Lady”. She felt she was not dressed until she had on a hat and began collecting them. Helen was famous for her “one-liner” jokes, keeping everyone at the nursing home in stitches.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clifford Imboden, and a brother, Ernest Haines.
Survivors include two daughter, Marilyn and David Libby of Lorimor and Carolyn and Glenn McConnelee of Orange, Calif.; three sons, C. Lavern and Sheila Imboden of Urbandale, Russell and Karen Imboden of Corona, Calif., and Larree and Pat Imboden of Dexter; two sisters, Alice Haines Couch of Adel and Virginia Haines and Gerald Harvey of Redfield; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham, and Redfield was in charge of arrangements.
