SEVENTY YEARS AGO
(July 15, 1886)

John T. Jones, Scott township pioneer, died July 4 at the age of 73 years. Born in Kentucky (2-25-1813), he lived for many years in Illinois and was an acquaintance of Abraham Lincoln. He came to Madison County in 1865.

An obituary notice of that noble old man of Scott township, John T. Jones, will be found in this issue. Madison county has many of nature’s noblemen but none are better than was our deceased friend. We did not hear of his death in time to make mention of it in our last issue.

OBITUARY

John T. Jones died at his residence in Scott township, Madison county, Iowa, July 4, 1886, aged 73 years, 4 months and 9 days.

He was born in Mason county, Kentucky, moved with his parents near Greencastle, Indiana, where he was first married, he lived there 21 years, then moved to Menard county, Illinois, where his wife died; he then married Mrs. Nance; he lived 21 years in Illinois.

He was one of Abraham Lincoln's associates. He moved to Madison county in the fall of 1865, where he has since lived until called home. His loss we deeply feel, but 'tis God that has bereft us; he can all our sorrows heal.
