Jacob I. Decker was born February 12, 1824 at Carpenters Point, Orange county, New York. He enlisted in the Mexican war in 1846 and served until the close 1848 (Pvt 7 Regt Infantry-New York) and in the fall of 1850 moved to Burlington, Des Moines county, Iowa, where he taught school until the spring of 1859, when he moved to Knox county, Missouri. Served as a union soldier in the Civil War and in fall of 1869 moved to Madison county, Iowa, where he has since lived until his death occurred at East Peru, Iowa on Thursday, March 17, 1904 at the age of 80 years, 1 month and 5 days.

Rev. Burnham, of the Christian Church, conducted the funeral service and rites over the remains of J. I. Decker, who died on the 17th.
