Andrew Z. Martin

Andrew Zenith Martin was born in Covington, Ohio, Oct. 16, 1865 and departed this life Nov. 10, 1916 at De Soto, Iowa, aged 51 years and 25 days. When 18 years of age he united with the Christian church at Winterset. On March 25, 1886 he was united in marriage with Effie F. McNeley. To this union were born three children: May, Avis, and Nevin.

About 15 years ago, he moved with his family from Winterset to De Soto, where he, with his wife, united with the Methodist church, later he moved to Carlisle, transferring his church membership by letter to the Methodist church of that place.

In 1912 he went from Carlisle to Nebraska where he lived about four months, then came to Van Meter, where he lived till last January, when he came to De Soto, where he resided until his death. Last fall, while visiting in Winterset, he reunited with the old Christian church of that place.

He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, three children, two brothers, three sisters and five grandchildren.

He was a kind and affectionate husband, a loving and devoted father and a great lover of home. Of two tasks to be performed, he expressed a preference for the more difficult one of the two if by that means he might be at home. He was a very quiet nature and while he never made much of an outward demonstration he believed in a personal Savior and endeavored to lead a consistent life.

During the last few years of his life, he was afflicted with heart trouble. He was able to attend church services during that time but little and at times was not able to engage in any active service. He often spoke of the church and expressed a desire that he might be able to attend. He thus showed that his heart was in the church if he could not be present. During all of life of anxiety, he never murmured nor complained, but kept bravely on with life's task, running with patience the race set before him.

Friday evening while wending his way homeward, after his day of toil suddenly "in the twinkling of an eye" the Lord called for him and took him away.

Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church the funeral services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. R. J. Tennant. Many relatives from out of town were in attendance, besides a great host of sorrowing friends and neighbors. In the cold and storm of a gloomy day, his mortal body was placed in the De Soto cemetery, there to rest till, clothed in celestial raiment, he shall enjoy the brightness and glory of immortality.
