St. Charles and Roundabout

John R. McCandlass (sic), aged seventy-nine years, died at his home in this place in the early morning of Wednesday, January 20, 1897. He had been a resident of Iowa some thirty years, and of St. Charles the last half of that time, where he was an honored citizen and served one year as mayor. He was well known to be honorable and upright in all things. A conscientious and consistent Christian, with a great heart overflowing with kindness to every one, an unusually charitable nature and a disposition to be industrious. His entire life has been blameless and well rounded out with good words and deeds.

He was well aware of his approaching end, was perfectly resigned to his Master’s will, and passed away with the full and satisfactory assurance of being unmistakably one of the redeemed. No perceptible disease preyed upon his body or mind, but death came from the gradual wearing out of one who had lived more than the average time allotted to man. Kind friends did all in their power to make him comfortable in his last days. He was attended constantly by his faithful and devoted wife, with whom he lived for more than fifty years, who is of the same age, and by reason of which she herself is very frail—and by his son, N. L. McCandlass, of Bevington, Iowa. His three daughters, Mrs. Wm. Mark, of Blockton, Iowa, Mrs. J. A. Downs and Mrs. J. M. Fulton, of St. Charles. One daughter, Mrs. Reed, of Minnesota, and one son, Robert McCandlass, who resides in the Indian Territory, were not present.

The funeral took place Thursday at 12 o’clock from the United Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. Mr. Cochran, pastor of the church. Great sympathy is felt and has been shown the afflicted in their sorrow and bereavement.
