Earlham Library Obituary Collection
Earlham, Iowa
March 1913

Martha Minerva DeVault daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. DeVault, was born near Ely, Linn Co., Iowa, Jan. 2, 1886. In 1890 she came with her parents to Madison Co., Iowa where she has since resided. On Dec. 14th 1898 she was converted during a revival meeting held at Penn Center, soon after uniting with the M. E. church. She lived an earnest Christian life always thoughtful of the welfare of others and doing work for her master whenever the opportunity came.

She attended the public schools in Penn township and was a graduate of the Earlham Academy in 1905. Later she took up the study of vocal music at Drake University of Des Moines and did some work as singing evangelist trying to win souls for God whom she served. Martha was an inspiration to all who knew her, especially those more intimately acquainted.

On Feb. 28th 1912 she was united in marriage to Raymond Smith with whom she lived one very happy wedded year.

On Feb. 27, 1913 there was born to this union a darling daughter which proved to be the price of the mother’s life. She passed over to the immortal throng on her first wedding anniversary Feb. 28th, 1913 almost at the hour of her marriage, aged 27 years, 1 month and 20 days.

She leaves to mourn her early departure a heart-broken and loving husband, an infant daughter, father, mother, one sister and three brothers, besides a host of friends numbered only by her acquaintances.
