GERALD GIBSON, WINTERSET

Gerald LeRoy Gibson, 86, of Winterset and formerly of Lorimor, died Aug. 16, 2007, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Lorimor United Methodist Church with Pastor Sandy Smith officiating. Burial was at Lorimor Cemetery with military rites performed by John B. Parks Afton V.F.W. Post 8882.

Gerald Gibson was born May 3, 1921, in Madison Township, Clarke County, to James F. and Guyda (Gorr) Gibson and received his education in the Clarke County country schools. Gerald entered the United States Army in September 1942, serving as staff sergeant until being discharged in May of 1945. He was active in the European Theater during World War II from June of 1944 until March 1945, receiving a Purple Heart.

On May 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Bette Louise Davis. Gerald, a Lorimor resident, farmed and worked for the Union County maintenance crew as a supervisor foreman for 35 years, retiring in 1988. Following Bette’s death in 2002, he moved to Winterset in 2007. His marriage to Lorrie Saveraid took place June 30, 2007, in Winterset. Gerald was a member of the Lorimor United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bette; two sons, Jim Gibson and Rick Gibson; three brothers, Junior Gibson, Paul Gibson and infant brother Eugene; and three sisters, Katharyn Hiskey, Virginia Denly and infant sister Christina.

He is survived by his wife, Lorrie, of Winterset; one son, Mike Gibson of Norwalk; two sisters, Betty Campbell of Pekin, Ill, and Pauline Neisemier of Murray; and seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
