GRACE DUFF DIES AT MONMOUTH

Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Duff a Victim of Appendicitis.

Grace, the younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Duff died early yesterday morning at Monmouth, Illinois. On last Thursday the family received a message that Grace was seriously ill with an attack of appendicitis. Miss Gertrude left that day and Mr. and Mrs. Duff the following day, when an operation was performed but to no avail.

It is seldom been our duty to chronicle a death more sad and expressions of sincere sorrow and sympathy for the bereaved are heard on every hand. She was a young lady of splendid worth, winning and lovable in manner and deeply devoted to the family circle and to her friends. Her future was full of promise and she would have graduated from Monmouth college in a few weeks. The family will reach home with the remains this evening, but the time of the funeral has not yet been announced.

Pete sorrow has prevailed among Monmouth college students today by reason of the death of Miss Grace Duff, which occurred this morning at the hospital at three o’clock. She was taken ill while attending her astronomy recitation, was excused and went to her rooming place. She continued to grow worse and was taken to the hospital where it was hoped that an operation might allay the attack. Last Friday Miss Duff passed through the ordeal of an operation successfully, and it was thought that recovery was probable. Her heart was unable to withstand the shock and when blood poisoning developed, late Tuesday afternoon, the patient’s constitution completely collapsed in life proved unable to last till morning.

Miss Duff was a member of the senior class of the college and would have received her diploma within three weeks. She had almost completed a strenuous year’s work, and had recently finished much of the extra work and hard studying in preparation of a week of enjoyment her college course. She was an able student and would have been among the honor graduates of her class.

She entered the college in the fall of 1902 and after spending her freshman and sophomore year there she secured a position as teacher in the public schools Winterset, Ia., Where her home has always been. She remained out of college for a year and returned to the college in the fall of 1905 and has been enrolled in the local college continually ever since.

Miss Duff was a young woman of Christian character and was active in performing her religious duties. She was a type of college girl which is not forward and never ready to impose on her friends she was reserved, modest, and at all times displayed those womanly traits of character that betoken good breeding and careful Christian training. She had acquired many friends in the college and many happy acquaintances among what few townspeople her lot chanced to be cast. She was a member of the A. B. L. Literary society, and during her course occupy the several offices which are in the power of her society to bestow.

In college social life Miss Duff was prominent. She was a charter member of the Phi Delta Sigma sorority, which is a local organization, and has always been popular in the functions of her sorority, as well as college society in general. She possessed a personality that acquired friends, and kept them, and her life here will long be remembered by the presence of Monmouth college.

Miss Grace Elizabeth Duff was born March 23, 1883, in Winterset, Iowa. She grew to womanhood there, and was graduated from the public schools in 1901.

She leaves a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. George Duff, and a sister Miss Gertrude Duff, who have been with her during the fatal illness. Her brother, Elbridge, known while in college here as “Peter” Duff, died a year ago last fall, shortly after he had completed the law course at Ann Arbor University, Michigan, and then set up his office at Oklahoma City. The bereaved parents and only sister of the deceased are bowed with grief, and will receive the sympathy of many friends here, where the 3 Duff children have received their college education. Miss Gertrude Duff was to the diploma orator at the A. B. L. society this commencement, and would have given her sister, in company with others, a diploma of graduation from the literary organization.

The ceremonies in connection with the May party held last night on the college campus, or cut short when the serious condition of Miss Duff was learned, and this afternoon no classes are being heard. The ballgame scheduled with Illinois Wesleyan for this afternoon has been postponed until tomorrow on account of the funeral of Miss Duff.
