EARL NELSON DIES OF BURNS

Earl Nelson, aged 76, of Winterset, was fatally burned last Friday morning in a fire which apparently started in his bed at the McCauley Nursing home here.

The Winterset Fire department was called to the nursing home about 7:10 a.m. Nelson was taken to Memorial hospital here, then transferred immediately to a Des Moines hospital for treatment of burns over most of his body. He died in Des Moines that evening.

Firemen found the bedding on fire in Nelson's bed, and flames in a nearby chair. Most of Nelson's clothing had been burned off. It was theorized that he had been smoking a cigar in bed, and the bedding became ignited.

There was little or no damage to the building.

Earl E. Nelson was a retired farmer and a long-time resident of Madison county. He was born here April 2, 1894, a son of Harvey and Carolyn Jackson Nelson. He was married Aug. 4, 1915, to Mary E. Forbes. Her death occurred Oct. 17, 1958.

He had retired from the farm and moved into Winterset in 1961.

Nearest surviving relatives are nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Collins Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Charles T. White. Burial was made in Winterset cemetery.
