He was licensed as a minister in this organization in 1925 and was in active service for ten years or until declining health forced him to retire some few years ago.

For one year after his marriage he lived in Des Moines, then he and his wife lived on a farm north of Earlham for 31 years, or until by accident he lost his hand. They then gave up the farm and came to Earlham where he had employment with the schools, acting as caretaker of the buildings for some 18 years.

Joe was a friend to everyone. He had a welcome for all and always made you feel better after having had contact with him. He was a devout Christian and was ever ready to take his stand for the right. He had a most cheerful personality and radiated good cheer wherever he went. He was a booster for the better things of life. We cannot mourn his passing, but how we will miss him, in the home, the town, the community and in the church. He served his generation well and is at peace with God. “He was a good man and full of the Holy Ghost.”

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church conducted by the Rev. J. J. Haughman, assisted by Rev. S. R. Overholser. Burial in the Bear Creek cemetery.
