Elizabeth Ford was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia on April 2, 1827 and departed this life on June 24, 1907, aged 80 years, 2 months and 22 days. She was married at Greensburg, Indiana to Ivan S. Ford on June 22, 1848.

Mr. and Mrs. Ford emigrated to Davis County, Iowa. Ten years later, they moved to Douglas township, this county, which continued to be their home until 1891, when they moved to Winterset.

Nine children were born to them 6 of whom are still living. They are W. M., Richard and Mrs. Will J. Smith, of this county. Mrs. Cool, Mrs. Harl Eyerly and Jared P. Ford who all live in Nebraska. She is also survived by two brothers and 2 sisters. The brothers and 1 sister, Mrs. Mary McDoughal, residing at the old homestead at Indianapolis, Indiana and 1 sister, Mrs. Margaret Beggs, of Moulton, Iowa. Her husband preceded her to the better world on April 28, 1902. She was laid to rest at the Winterset Cemetery, Winterset.

Mrs. Elizabeth Ford, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Fry, was born in Rockridge county, Va., April 2nd, 1827. She died near West Star June 24, 1907.

The subject of this sketch removed with her parents to Indiana in 1829. She was married to Ivan S. Ford at Greensburg, Ind., June 22nd, 1848. Mrs. Ford and her husband removed to Davis county, Iowa, in 1853, and to Madison county in 1863, when they settled on the farm in Douglas township, where they lived until they moved to Winterset in 1891.

Nine children were born to them of whom six are now living; three near Winterset and three in Nebraska. These were all present to see the mothers’ form laid to rest. All except one were at her bedside during her last hours. Besides her children, Mrs. Ford leaves two brothers and two sisters. The brothers and one sister reside at Indianapolis, Ind. This sister, Mrs. Mary McDougall, being present during the last hours of the deceased. The other sister resides at Moulton, Ia.

Mrs. Ford united with the M. E. church at Greensburg, Ind., when fifteen years of age. She and her husband were charter members of Fletcher Place M. E. church in Indiana. They were also members of the first Methodist society organized in what is now West Star neighborhood. When the first church was built in that neighborhood she suggested the name of “West Star” which was adopted by the congregation.

Mrs. Ford was greatly beloved by the people of her neighborhood on account of her kind, unselfish, helpful, Christian character. She was never content unless she could be helping some one. The people about her all looked upon her as a mother to them.

The funeral exercises held in West Star church, Wednesday, June 26th, 1907, at 10 a.m., were conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. E. Trueblood. The interment was in the Winterset cemetery.

Elizabeth Fry Ford

Elizabeth Fry Ford was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, April 2d, 1827, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Will Smith, near West Star on Monday, June 24th, 1907. She moved with her parents to Indiana in 1829, where she was married to Ivan S. Ford, at Greensburg, June 22, 1848. In 1853 Mr. and Mrs. Ford came to Madison county and located in Douglas township. Nine children were born to them, six of whom are living, three living in Nebraska. Mr. Ford died five years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Ford were charter members of the first M. E. church in their neighborhood, and which later developed into the West Star M. E church. Mrs. Ford suggests that name “West Star” for the church, and it was adopted by the congregation.

Mrs. Ford had been in poor health for several years, and about six months ago moved from the home place in the north part of the city where they had lived for sixteen years and went to make her home with her daughter. She was taken critically ill last Tuesday and was unconscious most of the time until death came. She was familiarly known as ”Aunt Betsy”, and all her acquaintances were her friends.

The funeral services were held Wednesday morning from the West Star church, or funeral being the first one held from the new church, and were conducted by Rev. C. E. Trueblood. Her daughters, Mrs. Everett Cool, of Ravina, Neb., and Mrs. Caroline Eyerly, of North Loop, Neb., and her son Jerod Ford, of Arcadia, Neb., were present at the funeral. Her sister, Mrs. Mary McDougal, of Indianapolis and her niece, Mrs. Rasine, of Des Moines, were also present at the funeral.
