Death of Wm. Bishop

Wm. Bishop, father of Cain and Abel Bishop, died at his home in the south-west part of town on Saturday morning. The deceased was born in Indiana November 18, 1836 and has been a resident of Winterset for forty years.

He had been failing in health for the past year and about ten days ago contracted small pox from which his enfeebled constitution was unable to rally. Other members of the family have the disease in a light form and by reason of strict quarantine; no further spread of the disease is feared.

Death of Wm. Bishop

Wm. Bishop, one of the old settlers of Winterset, where he has been a familiar figure for the past forty years, died at his home in the southwest part of town last Friday of small-pox and was buried the following day. He was really sick only about a week but on account of his extreme age and weakened physical condition he was not able to successfully combat the disease.

Mr. Bishop was born in Indiana, Nov. 16th, 1824. He was married to Matilda Jane Thompson in December 1849, who proceeded him to the better land eleven years. To this union were born eight children, four boys and four girls, seven of which are still living.

Mr. Bishop’s career was notable for its honesty, ardent Christian spirit and industry. Nobody can say that Wm. Bishop ever wronged him, or took more than was his due. To die with such a reputation, after a long and busy life is sufficient for any of us.

William Bishop, who was reported dangerously ill last week, died at his home in the southern part of the city on Friday. He was nearly 80 years old and had been in feeble health for several years.

"Uncle Billy Bishop" was a familiar figure on the streets of Winterset and was one of the oldest residents of the city. He came to Winterset soon after the close of the Civil War and worked for years in the old saw mill in the north part of town. He leaves several sons and daughters.
