Death of W. B. Garrett

W. B. Garrett died at the home of his son, G. H. Garrett, in this city, this morning at one o’clock, after an illness of several weeks, at the ripe old age of eighty-two years. Mr. Garrett was an old settler of Madison county, moving onto a farm in Walnut township in 1863 where he continued to live until 1891. There they raised a large family of children—thirteen in all and of which eight boys and three girls survive him. The funeral will occur tomorrow afternoon at two o’clock from the home of G. H. Garrett.

Mr. Garrett was one of the staunch and reliable men of the early period in the settlement of Madison county and was one of our best citizens, his life was one of industry, honesty of purpose and fidelity to duty. He raised his large family in such a manner that he was afforded the satisfaction of seeing them all reach maturity, and become, as himself, respecting and useful citizens.

Walter B. Garrett

Was born in Sandusky, Ohio, Nov. 31, 1821, and departed this life at the home of his son Geo. H. Garrett in Winterset, Ia., Feb. 11, 1904. Being at his death 82 years, 2 months and 21 days of age.

He was married in New Martainsburg, Ohio, to Matilda A. Fishback, on Jan. 8, 1845. To this union were born eight sons and five daughters, all of whom are living except two of the daughters. Mr. Garrett came from Ohio in 1865 and settled in Madison county where he has since resided. In 1896 his true and faithful companion grew weary with life’s journey and on June 26th she was not, for the Lord had taken her.

When about fifteen years of age he was converted and united with the M. E. church and remained a faithful follower of the Master to the end. Six of his sons and two daughters were present at his bedside during his last sickness, and like Jacob of old he pronounced a fathers blessing upon them and affectionately said, “good bye,” to each one. He spoke tenderly of the two sons and the two daughters who were absent, but assured all that he expected a reunion in the heavenly country where there would be no more sad goodbye’s. Just a moment before he ceased to breathe it seemed that like Stephen’s of old, the glory of the unseen world dawned upon his spiritual vision and he was heard to say, “Joy, Joy,’ Oh! Joy.”
