Elm Grove

The funeral of Obediah Allen was largely attended at the Elm Grove church on Sunday. Those from a distance were his sons and their wives from Des Moines, his brothers, Thomas Allen from Council Bluffs and Jonathan Allen and son from Prole, Warren county and his sister, Phoebe Hamner from north of Winterset.

Obituary

Obadiah Allen was born September 21, 1843 in Missouri and died May 9, 1903 at his home in Scott township, county, Iowa. Obi, as he was familiarly known, had been an intense sufferer for several months. The past few weeks it was thought he would recover, but on Saturday morning last he suddenly expired while sitting in his chair.

The deceased was married twice. The first wife was Mrs. Mary F. DeLong, who died in 1893. To this first union were born eleven children, of which eight were living at the death of the mother. The second wife was Miss Etta Hughes, whom he married in 1893. To this last union were born three children all of whom are left, with their mother and six children by the first union, to mourn the loss of father. Besides the immediate family the deceased has left a multitude of other relatives & friends.

He was a member of the Methodist church at Elm Grove, and was a faithful and earnest Christian and as such he will always be remembered.

The funeral services were held at Elm Grove Sun., May 10, at 3 p.m., conducted by Rev. W. C. Smith, of St. Charles, and old friend of the family, assisted by Rev. Wilkins, pastor of Peru. Interment was made in the Kale cemetery.
